Lightbulb! How’s my light today?

Lightbulb! How’s my light today?

There’s a special kind of clarity that comes with a simple lightbulb moment—when your perspective shifts, your path clears, and you see things in a brighter way. But what happens when you’re the one providing the light for others? What if, in helping someone navigate their storm, you dim your own light without realizing it?

I recently shared this analogy with someone going through a rough patch at work. They felt drained, constantly pouring themselves out to help their team while feeling unseen and unsupported in their own struggles. I gave them a suggestion—a symbolic yet practical tool:

“Get a lightbulb. Frame it and hang it in a visible spot where others will notice it.”

The purpose? It’s a reminder of your light. When someone asks why you have a lightbulb framed on your wall, your response could be:

“This lightbulb reminds me of the light I work to maintain within myself while helping others. No matter the storm, my light matters too.”

This simple object, a lightbulb, becomes more than just a metaphor. It’s a powerful visual cue for anyone who sees it, including yourself. It’s a symbol of balance: the balance between shining light for others and ensuring you don’t burn out.

Your Light Matters

In life, we often assume one of two roles:

1. The Light-Giver – the one offering encouragement, guidance, and solutions to others. 2. The Light-Seeker – the one navigating through a dark moment, searching for clarity and strength.

Both roles are valid. Both are necessary. And here’s the truth: at some point, everyone will be both.  The key is recognizing the cycle and honoring it. When you’re shining your light, make sure your “batteries” are charged. Protect your energy (PEACE). Replenish yourself. It’s not selfish to step back and tend to your own needs—it’s essential.  Similarly, when you’re the one seeking the light, don’t forget the effort it takes for someone else to shine theirs for you. Gratitude is the oil that keeps this dynamic running smoothly.

The Shared Light

Here’s where the lightbulb analogy deepens. When others see your lightbulb, it could inspire them to reflect on their own light. They may realize their need to recharge or feel encouraged by the way you maintain your glow despite the storms.

It’s a ripple effect. Your light doesn’t just illuminate—it inspires.

Practical Tips to Protect Your Light

1. Check your power source. What fuels your energy? Make time for activities, people, and environments that recharge you.

2. Recognize dimming signs. Feeling irritable, overwhelmed, or uninspired? These are indicators that your light needs attention.

3. Communicate your needs. It’s okay to let others know when you’re running low on energy and need to pause.

4. Be intentional about sharing light. Don’t overextend yourself. Help where you can, but know your limits.

Lightbulb On Your Wall

Imagine the difference this simple act could make in your daily life. A framed lightbulb, placed prominently in your workspace or home, becomes a conversation starter. It sparks reflection in others and serves as your personal commitment to stay balanced.

Whether you’re the one shining the light or the one needing it, remember this: everyone is working to reach the light. You don’t have to do it alone. By supporting each other, we ensure no one’s light goes out.

So, take a moment. Look at your lightbulb. Ask yourself: How’s my light today? Then adjust accordingly.
